Sitting on a sprawling beautiful and secure campus in the heart of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Academy for Child Enrichment offers area children with a country-like setting. Academy for Child Enrichment is located at 700 Camellia Drive and was founded in 1987.

As our mission states, we will provide the highest quality early care and education for your child. We will do this by providing teachers who are trained in early childhood theories and practice, and environment conducive to early learning and a research based curriculum that supports the areas of cognitive, physical and social-emotional learning, and partnering with families.

Our approach to early education is based on Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development. When we articulate the theory of cognitive development into practice we use research to inform our developmentally appropriate practice. Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) means teaching in ways that match the way children develop and learn so as to promote their optimal development and learning. Teachers make decisions about the education of the children on the basis of information about

  • Child development and how children learn
  • The individual strengths, needs, and interests of each child
  • The cultures of each child's family and community

Our curriculum The Creative Curriculum is based on five fundamental principles of

  • Positive interactions and relationships with adults provide a critical foundation for successful learning.
  • Social-Emotional competence is a significant factor in school success.
  • Constructive, purposeful play supports essential learning.
  • The physical environment affects the type and quality of learning interactions.
  • Teacher-family partnerships promote development and learning.

While our curriculum is based on the theory of cognitive development, we also believe in the idea of education as a social process from the work of John Dewey and the idea that there is a Zone of Proximal Development in which teachers are crucial partners with your child in helping them scaffold knowledge and understanding to the next level of development based on the work of Lev Vygotsky.

Supporting all of this is PLAY. Research has proved that the most effective means to learn. Through constructive, purposeful play children handle many different materials. In handling these materials children learn to observe, compare, sort, and sequence. Their knowledge grows as they experiment, make discoveries and modify their current thinking to incorporate new insights. Teachers use play to model and encourage more advanced skills by providing new and varied materials, problems to solve and thought proving questions. Play is also associated with children’s positive social skills and approaches to learning. Peer-play competence of preschoolers is associated with their motivation to learn, task persistence, autonomy, and prosocial behavior. Play also provides a context for foundational learning in the content areas. Children explore mathematical ideas and construct literacy understandings. They develop understandings about science and technology and learn fundamental process and inquiry skills.

To sum up our philosophy, children must engage in tasks actively in order to develop and learn. Children seek and process new information on the basis of what they already know. They also modify their thinking in order to make sense of the new information and experiences. Their knowledge grows as they experiment, make discoveries, and modify their earlier way of thinking to incorporate new information and learning.

Partnerships with families are reciprocal and characterized by mutual respect and the exchange of ideas. Reciprocal relationships are crucial in helping families support the child’s enthusiasm for and engagement in learning. Research has proven that these strong positive relationships between the teacher and families are even more important if the culture of the family and the teacher are different. 

Family-school bonds can enhance the child's problem-solving skills and social competency. Family engagement in a child's early educational experience is important because it increases the parent's knowledge of their child's program and can demonstrate to the child the value the parent places on education. Not only can strong family-school connections promote positive child gains during the preschool years, but research shows that the benefits extend will into the future.
